Bruce Babbitt collection, 1960

Bruce Babbitt is perhaps best known for his tenure as the Governor of Arizona (1978-1987) and his appointment as U.S. Secretary of the Interior (1993-2001). This collection contains a manuscript of “Composition, Distribution and Sources of the Triassic Chinle Conglomerates,” by Bruce E. Babbitt, which he wrote as an undergraduate at Notre Dame.

Bruce E. Babbitt was born in 1938 and was raised in Flagstaff where his family lived and worked as ranchers and traders. As a student, he attended the Notre Dame University and the University of New Castle where he pursued an education in geology and geophysics. Later he shifted his attention to law and politics and attended Harvard Law School. Babbitt enjoyed an active political career both at the state and national levels.
